What it looks like
Control » Thigh control
How?
“Thigh control is an essential element of football, and often players have difficulty mastering it. Thighs can be used to stop the ball dead, by relaxing the leg as the ball makes contact, or to play it to another member of your team by keeping the thight firm and letting the ball bounce off it. The trick is to make sure you get your thigh properly in line with the ball before you receive it. Then withdraw slightly upon impact to cushion the ball and allow the ball to fall gently.”
Why?
It is important when the football arrives at a height above the knee where it is too low to use your head or chest. During these times it is often not worth the risk of trying to use your head or reaching your foot up, and so this is where thigh control comes in.
Tips & drills
Drill: try keeping the ball in the air without using your hands or feet. You’ll find that you naturally resort to using your thighs – either to deflect the ball or to absorb its bounce.
